In the fall of 2010, Dark Side authors Schyrlet Cameron, Carolyn Craig, and Kathy Brown announced the opening of HOME GROWN BOOKS. They partnered with Keen Bean Coffee Roasters of Mt. Vernon, MO to display and sell books and musical CDs produced by local authors on shelves located inside the 60’s style coffee house. Later, they added four additional locations including Maggie Mae's Tearoom, MeMe's Country Cafe, Brown Egg Coffee Shop, and Mother Road Coffee Shop.
The authors came up with the idea of a bookstore dedicated to promoting local talent after they experienced difficulty getting national bookstore chains interested in stocking their self-published book. Authors participating in the Not So Square Arts Festival held in Mt. Vernon in September complained they were faced with the same obstacle. The three authors decided it was time to take matters in their own hands and Home Grown Books was born. “We realize how difficult it is to get a traditional bookstore to place self-published books on their shelves. We saw a need to address this issue,” stated Schyrlet.
Now, the three pioneers are taking the idea to the next level by offering you the chance to order these books and CDs from the convenience of your own home. On these pages, you will find links to artists and authors who live or grew up in the Ozarks. Some of them might even be your next door neighbor that you never knew had a half-dozen books published.
